The M25 anticlockwise exit at junction 11 shuts from 11pm Friday 2 October to 5am Monday 5 October. Then the A3 northbound at Wisley closes two nights.

The nine months of work at M25 junction 11 start tonight. Surrey County Council says the anticlockwise exit slip at Chertsey closes from 11pm on Friday 2 October to 5am on Monday 5 October. Junction 11 is the one that feeds the A320 into Woking through Ottershaw.

Then the A3 at Wisley takes over. National Highways shuts the A3 northbound at Wisley between its slip roads on the nights of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October.

M25 junction 11: this weekend’s closure, and nine months of work

Surrey County Council’s A320 scheme page, reviewed on 1 October, still carries the same plan (Surrey County Council, A320 North of Woking improvements). National Highways’ closure report lists the same weekend, from 11pm on 2 October to 5am on 5 October, as “slip road and lane closure for improvement works”.

The work adds a dedicated left-turn lane to the M25 exit slips in both directions. It also enlarges and resurfaces the roundabout, upgrades the drainage, signals and street lighting, and leaves the roundabout fully signalised. The council expects it to take about nine months, and says more slip road lane closures will follow.

The signed diversion this weekend:

  • stay on the M25 anticlockwise
  • leave at junction 10, Wisley
  • turn around at junction 10
  • come back clockwise and leave at junction 11

So drivers coming home from the Heathrow side go on to Wisley, about six miles further, and back.

The A3 and M25 junction 10 at Wisley, night by night

Junction 10 is the A3 interchange at Wisley, about six miles east of Woking. These are the closures there, all overnight:

The report gives maintenance and vegetation clearance as the reasons. Diversions are signed over the National Highways network. Painshill is the A3 junction at Cobham, about eight miles east.

Further out, but on routes Woking drivers use:

  • M3 eastbound, junction 3 to junction 2, carriageway shut from 10pm to 5.30am on the nights of Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 October, for routine maintenance. Junction 3 is at Lightwater, about seven miles north-west.
  • M3 eastbound, junction 1 entry slip at Sunbury, shut on the night of Monday 5 October.
  • M25 anticlockwise, junction 13 entry slip and A30 link at Runnymede, shut on the nights of Thursday 1 and Friday 2 October for hazardous tree clearance.
  • A3 northbound, Hogs Back to Longmoor, overnight resurfacing closures south of Guildford from Monday 5 October.

The report only looks a week ahead, and a night listed today can be re-dated or dropped before it happens.

Live and booked in the borough

Surrey County Council’s register, checked on 2 October, lists 72 sets of works in Woking borough (Surrey County Council street works register, Woking). The newest booking starts on 9 October, so the forward view is only about a week.

Madeira Road in Pyrford is the new long job: SGN has booked two months of gas works from Sunday 4 October. Virgin Media also has a permit there on 5 and 6 October.

Parvis Road is the A245, the main road from West Byfleet to M25 junction 10, so the Affinity Water job from 4 to 7 October is worth knowing about.

Commercial Way is the pedestrianised heart of the town centre, and Chobham Road runs past Jubilee Square. Both have Affinity Water bookings from 7 October.

Church Street East is down from four permits to two. The county’s highway works run to 9 October and a UK Power Networks job to 5 October. The SGN gas job there has gone from the list.

Affinity Water has the most jobs this week by some way, mostly short:

  • to 5 or 6 October: Windsor Way in Pyrford, Queen Elizabeth Way and Rydens Way in Hoe Valley, York Road in Mount Hermon, Albert Drive and Blackmore Crescent in Canalside, Fullerton Close in Byfleet, and the Strathcona Gardens footpath in Knaphill
  • 4 to 7 October: Pyrford Road, Pine Tree Hill, Bassett Road and Mayhurst Crescent in Pyrford
  • from 7 or 8 October: Woodlands and Oriental Road in Mount Hermon, Balmoral Drive in Pyrford, and a second booking in Rydens Way

The register gives the road, the promoter and the dates. It does not record whether a job means a full closure, temporary lights or a single lane. It also cannot show emergency works: utility companies can notify the council of a burst main or a gas leak up to two hours after work starts. Check the live map on the day.

Holloway Hill: the closure runs into 2027

This is the change that matters most if you drive north from Woking. The junction of Holloway Hill and Guildford Road, about six miles north of Woking near Chertsey, has been shut while a new roundabout is built. Surrey County Council says it will stay shut until early 2027 (Surrey County Council).

The reason given is the utilities. The council says moving pipes and services around tree root systems proved “more complex than expected”. It had planned to lay a concrete slab to protect the new services. That slab would later have to be broken up and removed, meaning another round of closures. The council has decided instead to keep the road shut and carry on.

There is still no through route or access for any vehicle. The signed diversion runs via:

  • Guildford Road
  • Chobham Road
  • Old Chertsey Road
  • Stonehill Road
  • back onto Holloway Hill

For Hardwick Lane, the diversion continues via Longcross Road and Lyne Lane. Access to the White Lodge Centre is kept open down Holloway Hill itself. No traffic is allowed onto Holloway Hill from Guildford Road. Pedestrian access is maintained.

The finished junction replaces the two roundabouts at Holloway Hill and Little Green Lane with a single new one, with footpaths, cycle paths, crossing points, better street lighting and flood measures. The council expects to complete this phase in spring or summer 2027.

Ottershaw: still paused, and still no restart date

Holloway Hill is one phase of a scheme running the length of the A320 between Woking and the M25. Surrey County Council is delivering it with Runnymede Borough Council and Homes England, funded by the Housing Infrastructure Fund.

The Ottershaw roundabout phase has been paused for months. The council’s page was reviewed again on 1 October, but its latest Ottershaw entry is still the 11 September update about routine inspections and surveys. It gives no restart date, and says an update will come “once the planning matters are concluded”.

The pause remains while the council works with its contractor, arboriculturists and ecologists on protecting the retained trees around the roundabout and restoring a small area of copse that was cleared by mistake. The council says the planning enforcement team is investigating that clearance.

The rest of the scheme:

  • St Peter’s roundabout signals are on, at all hours, and the traffic management has been removed. One lane stays closed on the eastbound carriageway of St Peters Way, towards the M25, for works in the central reservation.
  • There is a temporary 30mph limit on St Peter’s Way, in force under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order. It takes precedence over the 50mph markings already painted on the road, which only take effect when the works finish.
  • M25 junction 11: the slip road widening starts with this weekend’s closure, from 11pm on 2 October to 5am on 5 October.

Overall completion is targeted for autumn 2027. Three elements were cut from the scheme on cost grounds: St Anne’s roundabout, Little Green Lane to St Peter’s Hospital roundabout, and St Peter’s roundabout to Ottershaw roundabout.

Trains: Staines this weekend, Guildford on 10 and 11 October and again on the 18th

Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October: Staines area closed all weekend.

  • Saturday: Waterloo to Weybridge via Staines services terminate at Hounslow, with buses between Hounslow and Virginia Water via Staines. Waterloo to Reading services are diverted between Clapham Junction and Virginia Water. Waterloo to Basingstoke stopping services and Waterloo to Alton services run combined to Woking, where the train divides, and they call additionally at West Byfleet.
  • Sunday: Waterloo to Woking via Staines services terminate at Hounslow. Waterloo to Reading services are diverted between Clapham Junction and Virginia Water, calling additionally at Wimbledon, Surbiton, Weybridge, Addlestone and Chertsey.

Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October: Guildford area closed, and Staines again. This is the one that changes journeys south from Woking.

  • Saturday: Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford services terminate at Woking, with buses between Woking and Haslemere via Guildford.
  • Sunday: some Portsmouth services terminate at Woking and some start from Haslemere, with the same buses. Waterloo to Guildford stopping services terminate at Woking, and buses run between Woking, Worplesdon and Guildford.
  • Both days: the Staines lines close again, on the same pattern as 3 and 4 October. On the Saturday the Basingstoke and Alton trains again run combined to Woking and call at West Byfleet.

Sunday 18 October: Guildford area closed all day again. SWR lists the same Sunday pattern as on the 11th: some Portsmouth trains terminate at Woking, Guildford stopping services terminate at Woking, and buses run between Woking, Worplesdon and Guildford and between Woking and Haslemere.

Worplesdon station is in Guildford borough, about three miles south of Woking town centre.

Also closed on foot

The second footbridge over the Hoe Stream in Woking Park stays shut. It closed in November 2025 over structural concerns and the council says it is no longer serviceable. The other bridge, which links to the skate park and Elmbridge Lane, was refurbished in August and has reopened (Woking Borough Council).

The Queen Elizabeth Gardens play area in Horsell closed on 7 September for a new roundabout, monkey bars and resurfacing, and the council said it was due to reopen on Friday 18 September subject to the weather (Woking Borough Council). The council had published nothing more by 2 October, so we cannot confirm whether it has reopened. We covered the works in our report on the Queen Elizabeth Gardens closure.

Victoria Arch: why the town centre pinch point is staying

Every journey on the A320 through the town centre passes under Victoria Arch, the railway bridge by the station. The plan to fix it is dead rather than delayed. The £115 million Victoria Arch widening scheme was formally closed in October 2023. A project review had found costs rising by more than £50 million, and Homes England stopped funding it. The council’s own position, a Section 114 notice and debts around £2 billion, ruled out a rescue (Woking Borough Council; BBC News).

The council has now formally written the scheme off. Its September 2026 report on selling the Triangle site says there is “no legal obligation to continue to protect part of the site for the bridge widening scheme”, and that Network Rail “has indicated there is no appetite to proceed”. We covered that in our report on the Triangle site sale. Plan around the arch at peak times rather than waiting for it to change.

The key routes, and what they carry

  • A320 (Guildford Road / Victoria Way / Chertsey Road): the borough’s spine, Guildford to Chertsey through the town centre and Victoria Arch, and the main way to M25 junction 11. Carrying the roadworks above until autumn 2027.
  • A245 (Parvis Road / Byfleet Road): the eastern route through West Byfleet and Byfleet to M25 junction 10 and the A3.
  • A247: the north-south link through Sheerwater and West Byfleet towards Send and the villages.
  • A322 / A324: the western corridor past Knaphill and Brookwood towards Bracknell, Guildford and the M3.
  • The A3 skirts the borough’s south-east edge at Ripley and Wisley, reached via junction 10.

Parking, the station and the buses

Is M25 junction 11 closed this weekend?

The anticlockwise exit slip at junction 11, Chertsey, is shut from 11pm on Friday 2 October to 5am on Monday 5 October. Surrey County Council’s diversion is to carry on to junction 10, turn around and come back clockwise to junction 11. It is the start of about nine months of work to add a lane to the exit slips and signalise the roundabout.

Is the A3 closed at Wisley?

On some nights. National Highways shuts the A3 northbound at Wisley and at Painshill between the slip roads on the nights of Saturday 3 October, 10pm to 6am, and Sunday 4 October, 10.30pm to 5.30am. The link roads between the M25 at junction 10 and the A3 also close on single nights between 2 and 7 October.

How long is Holloway Hill closed for?

Until early 2027. Surrey County Council originally described it as a full six-month closure. It has extended it because moving utility services around tree roots proved more complex than expected, and because reopening the road would mean closing it again to remove a protective concrete slab. The council expects this phase of the scheme to finish in spring or summer 2027.

Have the Ottershaw roundabout works restarted?

Not yet. Surrey County Council’s latest Ottershaw entry is still its 11 September update about site inspections. It has not given a restart date and says it will update residents once the planning matters are concluded.

What is the speed limit on St Peter’s Way at the moment?

30mph. Surrey County Council says the temporary limit is in force under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order. It takes precedence over the 50mph markings painted on the road, which only apply once the works are finished.

Are trains from Woking affected?

Yes. On 3 and 4 October the Staines lines are closed, so Waterloo to Woking via Staines services terminate at Hounslow on the Sunday. On 10 and 11 October the Guildford area is closed as well: Portsmouth trains via Guildford terminate at Woking, with buses on to Haslemere. Guildford closes again on Sunday 18 October.
